Welcome Remarks for "Yamang Isip sa Panitikan"

Watercolor Calligraphy in Baybayin by Yvan Limson

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Yamang Isip sa Panitikan, the final program of the 3-day event hosted by the University of the Philippines Alumni Association, the Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines, and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines, celebrating National Intellectual Property Month.

This 3-day event is a melding of Law and Art, because to a great extent that is Copyright, one of the three main branches of intellectual property law. Law enunciates what the right is but generally it is Art that creates the Work. So it should not come as a surprise that this event was spearheaded by a lawyer, Bienvenido I. Somera, Jr., and an artist, Romeo S.A. Carlos.

This afternoon’s program, Yamang Isip sa Panitikan, continues this melding of Law and Art with a lecture on intellectual property rights and literary works, and spoken word performances. Spoken word is an oral art form that is word based, and for today’s program, all the performances will be based on the written words of great Filipino literary artists. In yet another melding of Art and Law, the spoken word will be performed by students of Law.

As National Artist of the Philippines Jose Garcia Villa advised:
First a poem must be magical
Then musical as a seagull
Whichever way you may want to understand the musicality of a seagull, at the very least we are being told by Doveglion that a poem must be spoken, a poem must be heard.

Ladies and gentlemen, we open today's program with our first spoken word performance...

Center for Kapampangan Studies

The Center for Kapampangan Studies (CKS) of the Holy Angel University has been profoundly successful in preserving the culture and history of the province of Pampanga.  Donating historical family memorabilia to centers and institutions such as this better preserves our historical heritage.
